Basically, the main difference is in etiology; i.e., type 1 is an autoimmune disorder leading to destruction of pancreatic beta cells, whereas type 2 is a metabolic problem caused by insulin resistance. The hyperglycemia characteristic of both types of diabetes causes similar complications in both types.
