Answer to Question 1

The most recent progress review shows that, overall, the weight status of children reflects a trend for the worse with 18 percent of children and adolescents ages 619 years being overweight. The prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents of all ethnic groups increased substantially with the proportion of students in grades 912 participating in daily physical activity increasing slightly. The incidence and prevalence of diabetes increased for the population as a whole. Progress was made in moving toward some of the objectives for the year 2010 . The prevalence of growth retardation among low-income children decreased for all races combined and for some Hispanics and Asians/Pacific Islanders. No progress was made in reducing the prevalence of iron deficiency among young children overall, although the prevalence did decline for low-income children. The three objectives for fruit, vegetable, and grain consumption have shown little or no progress in this decade.
