Now that you understand that both lifestyle and genetics can influence body weight, think back to Augusts story about her difficulty losing weight. Many people assume that someone like August could and should lose weight by diet and exercise. Do you think these views are correct?

Question 2

Answer to Question 1

An opinion. However, based on the information about genes and obesity as well as the many other factors discussed in Chapter 8 that influence dietary intake, the simple plan of placing a person on a diet and asking them to exercise will clearly be ineffective without some psychological counseling and perhaps surgical intervention, such as bariatric surgery.

Answer to Question 2

August wanted to be able to be playful with her children. August wanted to have her own choice of job rather than be offered employment based upon her weight. August was sensitive to the judgment of others. It is evident that August had many struggles that the non-obese individual does not have.
