Multiple biopsies are taken so that an accurate diagnosis can be made from the distal duodenum and proximal jejunum via endoscopy while the patient is conscious but sedated with evidence of:
 Villous atrophy
 Crypt hyperplasia
 Lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltrate in the lamina propria

Answer to Question 2

 Albumin, total protein, and prealbumin are all within normal limits, indicating no change or depletion of visceral protein stores.
 He also presents with an elevated LDL, low HDL, and abnormal LDL/HDL ratio.
 Though not of critical concern at this moment due to his respiratory crisis, they are consistent with long-term cardiac risk.
