Answer to Question 1

50 mL/hr x 24 hr = 1200 mL/day
1200 mL/day x 1.5 kcal/mL = 1800 kcal/day
1200 mL/day x 93.8 g pro/1000mL = 169 g protein/day

Propofol (8.2 mL/hr) x 24 hr x 1.1 kcal/mL = 216 kcal
1800 + 216 mL = 2016 kcal

This rate of infusion of Pivot 1.5 for nutrition support only provides74 of his energy needs, but exceeds his protein needs (13 g/day more than upper limit of estimated needs).

Answer to Question 2

Omeprazole is an acid pump or proton pump inhibitor.
These drugs interrupt the action of the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme, which moves hydronium ions across parietal cell membranes in exchange for potassium ions, resulting in an inhibition of the secretion of HCl.
Other proton pump inhibitors include lansoprazole, esomeprazole, and pantoprazole.
Other drugs used to treat GERD include antacids, histamine-2 receptor antagonists, foaming agents, and prokinetic medications that increase gastric motility.
