Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs in women during pregnancy, typically toward the end of the second trimester or the early part of the third trimester. Contributing factors include being overweight or obese; being over 25 years of age; having a history of higher-than-normal blood glucose levels; having a family history of diabetes; being of Hispanic/Latina, African-American, Native American, Asian American, or Pacific Islander descent; having previously given birth to a very large baby or a stillborn baby; having had gestational diabetes in the past; having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or another condition linked to problems with insulin; having ever had problems with insulin or blood glucose, such as insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, or prediabetes; and having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or heart disease.
