The common signs and symptoms of hyperkalemia include irregular heartbeat and damage to the heart. Those at higher risk for hyperkalemia include individuals with impaired kidneys, such as people with type 1 diabetes mellitus; individuals with kidney disease; and individuals taking medications for heart disease or diuretics that cause the kidneys to block the excretion of potassium.
