The EAR is the average daily intake of a nutrient that meets the needs for 50 percent of the individuals in a similar age and gender group, whereas the RDA (which is based on the EAR) is the average daily intake level that is estimated to meet the needs of 97 to 98 percent of the individuals in a similar group.
