Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

Folate is very important, especially in the first few weeks after conception. A deficiency during pregnancy may cause birth defects called neural tube defects. One result is anencephaly, where the brain doesn't completely form and the baby dies soon after birth. Another result is spina bifida where the neural tube doesn't form correctly and the baby is born with its spinal cord exposed. Folic acid reduces the risk of these birth defects by 50 to 70 percent if consumed at least the month prior to conception and during the early part of pregnancy.
