Intrinsic factor is a protein produced in your stomach that helps promote vitamin B12 absorption. It binds with B12 in the small intestine, where the vitamin is absorbed. Individuals who cannot make intrinsic factor are diagnosed with pernicious anemia and must be given injections of B12 directly into the blood, bypassing the intestine.
