Answer to Question 1

Fundamental similarities and differences in nucleic acids have given rise to three main kinds of living organisms: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya, called domains. Bacteria and Archaea are both domains of very small single-celled organisms that lack distinct compartments within their cells. They have some important chemical and genetic differences, however, and the walls surrounding their cells are structurally different. The Bacteria have evolved diverse metabolic abilities-some are photosynthetic, others heterotrophic-and are familiar to use as decomposers and disease agents. Some Archaeans are called extremophiles because of their ability to withstand extremely hot or corrosive environments.
