Answer to Question 1

ANS:Answer
should include:
In Chapter 10, you learned that the public and media have altered notions as to what a
tidal wave is. They consider any large wave a tidal wave. Tsunamis are the most
notable wave to receive this title in the media.
Tidal bores are true tidal waves because they are generated by the rapid influx of tidal
currents. They form at inlets and river mouths that are exposed to large tidal fluctuations.
Tidal bores are steep waves that move upstream due to the force of an incoming tidal
crest in an enclosed area,
These waves move towards land at higher speeds than are theoretically possible for a
given shallow-water wave at that depth. It travels rapidly upriver.
The danger of tidal bores is reduced because they are predictable. They are associated
with incoming tides.

Answer to Question 2

ANS:Answer
should include:
Spring tides occur each time there is a new or full moon. The solar bulge and lunar bulge
are in alignment because the sun, moon, and Earth are in a straight line.
The reinforcement of the solar and lunar tides causes extreme high tides and the lowest
of low tides. There are organisms in tune with these tides for breeding purposes.
Neap tides happen with the moon, Earth, and sun form a right angle. This corresponds to
first and third moon phases. The solar and lunar bulges are perpendicular to each other.
Neap tide alignment of the solar and lunar bulges creates the lowest high tides and the
highest low tides.
These types of tides are not seasonal. They each cycle ever two weeks with the phases of
the moon.
