Answer to Question 1

A scannable resume has a plain format that allows organizations to scan it as pure text. Once scanned, the
information is stored in a database. When an organization has a position open, the recruiter scans the database for
key words, such as bilingual and team building. The database is scanned, and within minutes a list of applicants
whose resumes match the stated criteria is brought to the screen.
Without the scanning process, an organization must handle individual resumes to identify their desirable
applicants.

This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
