Answer to Question 13

ANS: (CH3)3N is a weaker nucleophile than (CH3)2NH.

Answer to Question 14

CH3NH2 is a stronger nucleophile than NH3, so CH3NH2 will be alkylated further. The (CH3)2NH so
produced will also be further alkylated to give (CH3)2NH, which can be alkylated to give (CH3)4NI.
Therefore, a mixture of alkylated products will be obtained.

Answer to Question 15

Unhindered amines (ammonia, primary, secondary) are good nucleophiles; the tertiary amine is
apparently too hindered to compete with the nucleophilicity of the alcohol.
