Skilled nursing care consists of 24-hour care including medical and other forms of care, usually from nurses. Intermediate care is also medical care usually provided by nurses, but at a less intense level. In most instances, the differences between these levels have to do with the types and numbers of people on staff. There are federal and state guidelines that dictate minimum levels of care in nursing homes in the United States.
