Answer to Question 1

Acute diseases are conditions that develop over a short period of time and produce a rapid change in health. Examples of acute diseases are colds, influenza, and food poisoning. Most acute diseases are treated with medications (such as antibiotics for bacterial infections) or are allowed to run their course (as in the case of viral infections). Chronic diseases, in contrast, are those that last more than three months and may be accompanied by residual functional impairment that requires long-term management. Chronic diseases include arthritis and diabetes mellitus.

Answer to Question 2

chronic diseases; functional impairment
