It is also known as law of precedent. Civil law developed during the Roman Empire and was modernized by the French in the nineteenth century under the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte. Civil law is based on legislation or legal authority which involves the rights of private citizens.Civil law systems, for example, are based primarily on legislation: Courts apply the provisions of statutes, thus creating a system of consistency through decisions based on principles.
