Common law refers to the system of law established in England that spread to much of the English-speaking world. Common law a body of law based on the concept that legitimate legal authority derives from the consent of the people and is based on customs and traditions embodied in case law. It is also known as law of precedent. Civil law developed during the Roman Empire and was modernized by the French in the nineteenth century under the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte. Civil law is based on legislation or legal authority which involves the rights of private citizens.Civil law systems, for example, are based primarily on legislation: Courts apply the provisions of statutes, thus creating a system of consistency through decisions based on principles.
