Answer to Question 1

The geographical and cultural area of the Middle East extends from the western Saharan
Plans of Africa to the eastern mountains of ancient Persiacurrent day-Iran, Afghanistan,
and Pakistan. The area is bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea and to the south
by the beginning of the jungles of Africa . It also has significant historical sites, some of
which are referred to as the cradles of civilization, in the Nile River Valley in Egypt and
Mesopotamia on the plains between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Iraq. The area historically
represents some of the earliest and most advanced civilizations known to mankind and
is the birthplace of the world's three major monotheistic religionsChristiani ty, Judaism,
and Islam. It is precisely because of the long, rich, and varied culture that conflicts existed in ancient times, and in part still exist today. Due to oil, some of these countries are very rich, but the wealth is often concentrated in the hands of a few. This disparity between the rich and the poor has also created strife within these nations.
