How has technology affected the art and jobs of set and costume designers?

A friend of yours tells you that she is going to become a playwright and make a living off that for the rest of her life. You tell her that it is very hard to make a living solely off of playwriting and that she should pursue other routes as well.
 
  When she asks you what other options there are you come up with a list of three in your mind. The other options you come up with are working somewhere else in the theatre, such as the box office, working as a screenwriter for T.V. in addition to playwriting, and seeking membership to professional groups such as the Dramatists Guild. presentation of stage design or the invention of electric tools and machines that make
building much more feasible and, therefore, common in theatre.
