Answer to Question 1

A costume designer's most basic tool is fabric, which can be adapted through dyeing, painting, stenciling, aging, and distressing. Costumers also use other materials, such as metal or plastic, along with fabric, to shape, disguise, and reveal the human form. Costume designers use ornaments, such as lace, buttons, tassels, embroidery, and sequins, and accessories, such as hats, scarves, shoes, jewelry, canes, and handbags. Costume designers also use wigs and hairpieces, and may dye, cut, shave, or style an actor's own hair. A designer uses makeup to help define a character, create old age, accentuate character traits, or reshape the face completely, and masks to set a presentational style or provide an even greater alteration of persona.
