Briefly explain why carbon and silicon can form oxides with such different physical properties, gaseous CO2 and solid SiO2.

Answer to Question 1

Carbon atoms are small enough to form  bonds with oxygen due to the overlap of p orbitals, resulting in the formation of double C O bonds. Consequently, CO2 forms individual molecules that interact with each other via weak London dispersion forces. Silicon atoms are too large and form only single bonds with oxygen, four such bonds per each silicon atom, with each oxygen atom bridging between two silicon atoms, resulting in a covalent-network solid.
