Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are products of the reduction of iron ore with carbon (coke). Reducing magnetite with hydrogen produces water, which has less effect on the environment and climate change. Samples from an oxygen furnace can be monitored and the oxygen can be adjusted to minimize the production of metallic impurities.
