Cigarette smoking increases the rate of lung cancer 10-fold. Asbestos exposure doubles the rate of lung cancer. When an individual is exposed to both asbestos and cigarette smoke, the increased rate is 90-fold greater than the sum of the individual effects. The two act synergistically to enhance the effect of each other.
