Answer to Question 2

Screws should be used rather than nails, 12 inches o.c. on ceilings, 16 o.c. on walls. If framing members are 24 inches o.c., screws should be placed maximum of 12 inches o.c.
Thorough inspection of studs should be made before application of gypsum board, and warped studs should be replaced.
After all sheets are installed, outside corners are protected by a metal corner or bead, which provides resistance to edge cracking and chipping.
Joint cement, spackling compound (mud) is applied to all joints with a 5 wide spackling knife. Tape is placed over joint and pressed into mud.
Outside beads have joint cement feathered to meet the edge. Another layer of mud is applied, and outer edges are feathered.
After drying, mud is sanded; third coat applied, extending feathering beyond previous coats. Screw holes are filled with mud and sanded smooth.
The surface may be left smooth, ready for painting or wallcovering, or may have a texture appliedorange peel, skip-troweled, or heavily stippled finishtexture helps hide surface imperfections.
