Answer to Question 1

Private label merchandise describes goods designed and produced exclusively for a particular
retailer's target audience. Developing private label lines affords the retailer the opportunity to
serve specific customer needs, fill gaps in brand name offerings, and increase profit margins.
Price competition on private label goods is virtually impossible because a retailer's competitors
are unable to carry the private labels of other stores.

Answer to Question 2
