When the sales of lipstick increase consumer confidence is decreasing. Leonard Lauder
expressed this phenomenon after September 11, 2001 when lipstick sales were on the rise.
One connection may be that lipstick is an inexpensive way to change one's appearance and
increase self-assurance. It could also be considered an inferior good.
