Ionotropic receptors are ion channels that open as soon as the neurotransmitter attaches and close when the neurotransmitter is removed, making the effects rapid and short-lived.
Metabotropic receptors use a second messenger system to affect many different activities in the cell, which are slower but longer lasting.
