Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: True

Answer to Question 2

They are important because most children at that level do not have highly developed reading skills. These children tend to gain much of their understanding of the story from the illustrations as well as from listening to the words. Nearly all of the books one might use in an early childhood program are actually classified as picture books even though they often have some text. The fact that both auditory and visual cues are used, provides a multi-sensory approach to language learning.
