It is crucial to keep lines of communication open and to remove language as a barrier. If the parent and the teacher cannot speak the same language, it is important to get an interpreter. The IFSP or the IEP may provide those services for both the family and the early childhood education environment. In general, communication is a vital link uniting all segments of the team effort. It is useful for both the teacher and the family to look at their own differences. They may have different communication styles, and they may process information differently. Useful strategies may come from understanding the various perspectives. This will enable families to appreciate their differences and to empathize with their child who is also different in his or her own way. The teacher should recognize that supporting the whole family is an essential element of helping a child.
