Answer to Question 1

When a child is allowed to self-select, after a few days, the child will be wasting less food and only eating as much as he or she takes. It allows the child to regulate his or her food intake. When children see others taking foods unfamiliar to them, they are more likely to try these new foods than if they were served the food.

Answer to Question 2

If a child were bringing cookies and candy, I would send a note home or talk with the parent about the no cookies, candy, sweets policy that the early childhood education environments uses. I would ask the parent to provide a more healthy alternative and give the parent suggestions and perhaps a handout or brochure about nutrition.
