Answer to Question 1

Children tend to get more empty calories when eating fast food, and they get an overabundance of fat, sugar, and salt. Fast food is available in malls, on main streets, in bowling alleys, at theme parks, on airplanes, and on cruise ships. Fast food is even available at some schools, where the fast food chains and soft-drink manufacturers sponsor the school in return for marketing their products on campus. Eating right at school can be problematic and often it is food items that are similar to fast foods that contribute to the problem with high fat and sodium content. One in every five public schools serves branded-name fast foods, although there is a trend to stop these practices in schools.

Answer to Question 2

Children and adolescents should spend 60 minutes (1 hour) or more engaged in physical activity daily. These should be from three types of activity: aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and bone-strengthening activities. It is important to encourage young people to participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age, that are enjoyable, and that offer variety.
