Answer to Question 1

The Dietary Guidelines of 2010 are based on four premises: (1) Reduce the incidence and prevalence of overweight and obesity of the U.S. population by reducing overall calorie intake and increasing physical activity. (2) Shift food intake patterns to a more plant-based diet and increase the intake of seafood and fat-free and low-fat milk and milk products and consume only moderate amounts of lean meats, poultry, and eggs. (3) Significantly reduce intake of foods containing added sugars, solid fats, sodium, and refined grains.(4) Meet the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Answer to Question 2

There are several reasons that dental caries have increased in the population of children in this country. The first may be the increase in soft drink consumption and the consumption of juices. The AAP is now suggesting that children be limited to 4 to 6 ounces of 100 fruit juice per day. Another reason may be that parents do not understand the importance of oral health or may not have access to dental insurance. In some cultures dental care is only accessed when necessary, so a family from another culture may not think of seeing a dentist as a preventive measure.
