Answer to Question 1

Thorough investigation of the outdoor area is the first step. Check for all standing water such as buckets, water tables, birdbaths, and old tires. Water tables and bird baths should have the water changed frequently and other containers should have the water poured out. Buildings should be inspected for structural gaps where wasps can gather.

Answer to Question 2

Skin cancer from sun exposure begins in early childhood. Scientists believe that two things can predispose a person to skin cancer: (1) lifetime exposure and (2) severe sunburns. It may only take one severe sunburn as a child to cause melanoma in adulthood. Because children play so much outdoors and the outdoor environment in early childhood education environments is so important to children's development, it is critical that sun safety policies be followed.
