Answer to Question 1

Answer: The basal ganglia include the caudate nucleus, the putamen, and the globus pallidus. Damage to this system results in motor movement problems (e.g., Parkinson's disease).

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The brain overproduces neurons. Apoptosis serves to eliminate neurons that cannot make appropriate synaptic contacts.
