Samantha is a fourth-grade girl enrolled in a public school in an urban area. Ms. Mortenson is Samantha's teacher and has been teaching for 22 years. She has used the same curriculum over the past years with only minor updates. Ms. Mortenson describes Samantha's class as "challenging" with 14 boys and eight girls. Samantha is regarded as a "tomboy" because she loves baseball and football, enjoys running and climbing trees, and loves to be outdoors with her brothers. Her classmates tease her about being a "tomboy" and Samantha is beginning to spend more and more time alone. School has become increasingly more difficult for Samantha and her academic performance is starting to decline.
Why is Samantha considered a "tomboy"?
