For neurotransmitter release a presynaptic neuron to occur
 
  a. The vesicular membrane must fuse with the pre-synaptic membrane.
  b. Neurotransmitter must first be released into the cytoplasm before
  reaching the synapse.
  c. The vesicle containing the neurotransmitter must be released into the
  synapse, whereupon the vesicle then ruptures, spilling the
  neurotransmitter into the synapse.
  d. Calcium ions bind to the neurotransmitter molecules stored in the
  vesicle, transporting them into the synapse.
