The dissolution of the Roman Empire created a chaotic and dangerous climate for travelers. This period, from roughly 450-1450 AD, was known as the Dark Ages when warfare was practically continuous.

Since human beings are naturally curious about the unknown, as soon as technology provided the wherewithal for travel and tourism in the form of sea-faring vessels and animal-based transport, people began to migrate and explore foreign territories.
