-longitudinal designs study the same group of people over an extended period of time
-cross-sectional designs compare groups of people of different ages at one point in time
-sequential designs are like a cross-sectional design that goes on for a short, rather than extended, period of time
-all three of these designs allow for the study of developmental trends in abnormal behavior
-a longitudinal design might result in a high attrition rate, while a cross-sectional design does not run this risk
-a cross-sectional design might retain more participants, but might contain cohort effects
-a sequential design attempts to take the best of what longitudinal and cross-sectional designs have to offer and avoid their risks
