- men are at greater risk for substance use, antisocial personality, psychosexual, and developmental disorders while women are at greater risk for anxiety and mood disorders
- the extent to which race and ethnicity are risk factors for mental disorder has been difficult to establish
- lower educational and socioeconomic levels as well as divorce or separation from partner are general risk factors for mental disorder
- other risk factors include individual, family, and community or social factors
- protective factors are associated with lower rates of mental disorder
- protective factors vary across age, gender, race, and ethnicity
