- lower educational and socioeconomic levels as well as divorce or separation from partner are general risk factors for mental disorder
- other risk factors include individual, family, and community or social factors
- protective factors are associated with lower rates of mental disorder
- protective factors vary across age, gender, race, and ethnicity
