 Used to explain how repeated stress, even when occurring at lower levels than initial stress, can trigger changes in mood
 The brain becomes sensitized to stress, more vulnerable
 Later episodes of depression occur in response to less stress
 Explains how and why exposure to stress in young children creates changes in the brain
 Also explains why more depression occurs during adolescence since there are more brain changes that occur in adolescence as well as hormonal changes
 Example  any reasonable example that demonstrates early or repeated exposure to stress leads to episodes of depression
