 Allostasis  process of maintaining stability or homeostasis by activating stress hormones to adapt to stress (environmental or internal)
 Allostatic load or overload  wear and tear to the brain and body by allostatis, particularly when allostatis is continually activated or doesn't stop when stress is no longer present
 Allostasis is a needed and adaptive process that protects an individual in times of stress and nonstress; however, when this process goes into overload or is dysregulated, it can cause damage to the body and the brain (allostatic load or overload) leading to psychopathology or physical illness
