 Multifinality  similar circumstances that lead to different outcomes
 Example of multifinality  children who similar early development (e.g., born prematurely) have different outcomes as adolescents (e.g., learning disabilities, attention problems, minimal difficulties in school or home)
 Understanding  complexity of development and circumstances that can lead to psychopathology; help in knowing when and how to intervene
