Substance dependence is defined as a maladaptive pattern of substance
use that leads to clinically significant impairment or distress. The key elements are tolerance (a need for markedly increased amounts of the substance to achieve the desired effect), withdrawal (physical symptoms that occur when a person stops or cuts down on the use of a psychoactive substance), and compulsive substance use (behavior directed toward obtaining the substance, frequently called drug-seeking behavior).
