DSM has expanded considerably over the years in terms of including new diagnostic categories. It has moved away from the psychoanalytic perspective and the description of underlying conflicts to a more objective, behavioral description of symptoms. The current version of the DSM-5 pays special attention to developmental and cultural influences on abnormal behavior.
