Answer to Question 1

People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia and living in developing countries tend to have more positive prognoses for the disorder than their counterparts who live in developed countries. The explanation appears to be that certain cultural factors present in developing countries play a role in the course of the disorder. For example, differences in social structure (developing countries offer greater amounts/types of support; simpler environments/lifestyles are easier to negotiate when a person is cognitively impaired), more central family role in patient care (patients are more likely to be cared for at home rather than be hospitalized), and different beliefs in the causes of mental disorders (social/supernatural etiology vs. biological etiology).
