Answer to Question 1

Positive symptoms are abnormal behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that are absent in people who do not have a psychiatric disorder. Examples of positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, speech abnormalities (i.e., thought blocking, loose associations, clang associations), and unusual or bizarre behaviors (i.e., catatonia, waxy flexibility). Negative symptoms refer to the absence of behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that are present in people who do not have a psychiatric disorder. Examples of negative symptoms include blunted affect, anhedonia, alogia, avolition, and psychomotor retardation. Cognitive impairments are disruptions or deficits in cognitive functioning. Examples include visual, verbal learning, and memory impairments; inability to pay attention; decreased speed of information processing; and impaired abstract reasoning and executive functioning.
