Daniel makes his weekly run to the grocery store. This time, he pays with a fresh 100-dollar bill. The young cashier hands Daniel his change and Daniel quickly stuffs it into his pocket. He loads up his car and heads home, where he discovers the cashier has given him $20 too much in change. Even though the store is 3 miles away, Daniel drives back to the store and hands the cashier the $20 overage. When asked why he returned the money, he stated, "I always value honesty and I would want someone to do the same for me." According to Kohlberg, Daniel is in the __________ stage of moral reasoning.
