Interpersonal therapy was studied in an investigation of the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy. The researchers used interpersonal therapy as a placebo control group in their study. They were interested in studying the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy and needed a credible placebo. At the end of the study, cognitive therapy was more effective than interpersonal therapy. However, at the 12-month follow-up, the interpersonal therapy group continued to improve. They equaled those of the cognitive behavior therapy group and outdistanced those in the behavior therapy alone group.
