Question 1

An exothermic reaction causes the surroundings to
◦ increase in temperature
◦ become acidic.
◦ expand.
◦ decrease in temperature.
◦ release CO2.

Question 2

At 25°C, the following heats of reaction are known:
2ClF(g) + O2(g) → Cl2O(g) + F2O(g)
Δrxn =  167.4 kJ/mol
2ClF3(g)  +  2O2(g) → Cl2O(g)  +  3F2O(g)
Δrxn =  341.4 kJ/mol
2F2(g) + O2(g) → 2F2O(g)
Δrxn =  –43.4 kJ/mol
At the same temperature, use the above data to calculate the heat released (kJ) when 3.40 moles of ClF(g) reacts with excess F2:
         ClF(g) + F2(g) → ClF3(g)

◦ 109 kJ
◦ 233 kJ
◦ 370. kJ
◦ 465 kJ
◦ 1,580  kJ

The use of salicylates dates back 2,500 years to Hippocrates's recommendation of willow bark (from which a salicylate is derived) as an aid to the pains of childbirth. However, overdosage of salicylates can harm body fluids, electrolytes, the CNS, the GI tract, the ears, the lungs, the blood, the liver, and the kidneys and cause coma or death.
